New York City faces a crippling political crisis unlike any seen in recent memory.
Eric Adams's tenure as mayor has been one unmitigated disaster after another. His regressive policies–from unleashing the NYPD to proposing draconian budget cuts to basic community services like libraries–have taken New York City backward, at a time when overlapping crises in the city have made life for the non-elite increasingly impossible.
The federal corruption charges brought against Adams late last year should have been a point of departure within the political environment in New York City, where the status quo was no longer tolerable and new political opportunities began to flourish.
Yet what we have suffered with instead has been further disaster. A feckless, uninspiring cast of also-rans and opportunists who had little chance of defeating Adams are now facing even greater odds with serial sexual harasser Andrew Cuomo joining the competition to be the Democratic Party's candidate for New York City mayor in November.
Keeping this kind of situation from happening in the future isn't going to happen in one election cycle. Yet it has to start now, given the urgent need for the opportunity to have elected leaders who actually represent us, rather than the donor class or political clubs. New York City has suffered enough, but looks likely to suffer even more—THE BREAK NYC is a project to stop the political bleeding and start community healing.
